What it’s Like Having Learning Disabilities as a Teenager, by Nathan

The things I find challenging are pretty common for someone with NVLD, ADHD and learning challenges which are attention, focusing, visual-spatial skills, and expressive and receptive language. I have trouble learning some concepts and then remembering them after. Also, I can’t always put thoughts onto paper.

Having NVLD affects me at school because I don’t always learn from the teacher’s lesson, and it is harder for me to answer questions or understand instructions. So, advanced subjects are not for me right now. It is also hard for me to implement feedback and format my assignments. As well, handwriting is affected a lot because I can’t use space on a page properly, so I find it hard to take notes on paper. For me, this means I’m bad at Math and English.

NVLD affects me outside of school because it’s hard for me to make new friends. It’s also challenging for me to learn new languages and I can be a little clumsy at times, so playing certain sports is hard. Also, for some people, understanding the world around them can be challenging. But for me, NVLD affects me in a different way, because I’m always attuned to the world around me because I have ADHD as well.

Having NVLD can be hard sometimes, but it has rewards as well because I learn and think in a different way. How it affects me can either be good or bad depending on the situation. Sometimes it can be good when I think in a different way because then I have different ways to solve problems and come up with answers. So while it may take longer than others, I may have an answer with a better foundation.

NVLD can be hard because I don’t always learn as fast as others so it can be hard on my self-esteem and understanding of certain subjects. But for me, in high school, sometimes it’s a good thing because I’m doing a bunch of different subjects during the day and some I have a chance to grow in, while others I already know a lot.

NVLD shouldn’t bring you down, because you know you have stuff to work on. This means that you always get to learn, which is good because it helps you get to know your strengths and weaknesses. In the end, you should have a growth mindset and know that you can be whatever you want to be.
