“Not College Material,” by Katie

My name is Katie. I am a person with a language impairment and learning disabilities. I was diagnosed at the young age of three. I did not start talking until I was three years old. I did not talk in a complete sentence until I was five years old. I am the only person with a disability in my immediate family.

In high school I was told not to go to college by my high school counselor. Other people told me not to go to college as well. Unfortunately, they did not know who they were dealing with. And to get a job working at a child care center.

So I did not do what she suggested.

I went to college instead. I started my college career at Meramec, a community college in St. Louis, MO. I took classes towards an Associates of Science degree in early childhood education. Then, once I got that degree I took additional classes that would transfer to a four year university. Then, I went to Maryville University in St. Louis, MO. I entered the rehabilitation services program and got a Bachelor’s of Science degree in the Independent Living track supporting individuals with disabilities.

Even though it took me twelve years to complete my Bachelor’s of Science degree I proved people wrong. I come from a very unique social group. All of my friends that I hang out with are people with disabilities. We are not a support group, we just have the same experiences. Today I utilize my college degree by working as a Paraprofessional to support students with disabilities. I also work for Easter Seals Midwest as a respite provider for young children with Autism. I enjoy seeing my students and clients reach there goals just like me. I love doing what I do each day!

I am in the process of writing my life story, in hopes that it will be published someday. I have an amazing story to share. I would also love to be a motivational speaker some day to share my life experiences!
