My Journey to Florida, by Ryan

It all began when we loaded up my dad’s car and my car.  My car was shipped from PA to Florida. My dad drove down to Florence, South Carolina. It took about 8 hours. During the drive, my mom and I slept most of the time. I greatly appreciated my dad driving. We stayed at a hotel in Florence for one night and then my dad proceeded to drive to the Homewood Suites in Palm Beach Gardens. That took about another 8 hours. We stayed there for 12 nights until our apartment was ready.

During that time, I began training at The Learning Center located at the Els Center of Excellence in Jupiter, Florida. This school is a Palm Beach County charter school for children with autism. This is where I got a job as a teaching assistant where I have a class of middle school students. Leading up to the training, I was very nervous and scared. I did not want to mess up and was worried about what people would think of me. My parents informed me that you are always nervous before you start any new job. The training was hands-on and included a written test. The written test included multiple choice questions. I was so anxious and studied hard because I wanted to make sure I passed the test. I did pass both tests with flying colors. My parents were very proud of me, as always. When that was over, I was worried and nervous about meeting people. During the first week, I felt very homesick and didn’t want to stay. My parents reminded me that this was what I wanted. Now, as I enter my fourth week here, I joined Crunch Fitness and signed up for a co-ed kickball league which begins in September. I also plan to attend Chabad in Jupiter, volunteer with Best Buddies and participate in yoga sessions. In addition, I got some staff members’ phone numbers to hang out with them. Trust me, this has not been easy, but I am going to still put myself out there. I appreciate all my parents’ support and help through this transitional move.
