The Working World with NVLD, by Laura

The working world can be tricky when you have NVLD! Having now formally disclosed, in my working environment as a SEN teacher, it’s like a window has finally opened and the support around me has been immense! I’m so thankful that I have the most amazing support, with an NVLD coach, regular check-ins with my manager, proofreader, and voice-to-text technology. I hope all employees with NVLD can have access to all the job requirements they can get, in order for them to do their jobs with joy and as stress-free as possible.

What is magical about having the superpower of NVLD, is that you can relate to children with different learning needs. You are open and patient with the way children learn – having learned a different way with having NVLD, primarily through oral means, results in being able to relate to teaching in a way that “taps into” the way students learn.

Teaching has been a way to springboard into a world where neurodiversity can be promoted and celebrated! As the saying goes “if a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn.”

As someone with NVLD, I can say that by disclosing and getting access to work arrangements, was the best the best choice I have made in my working life. Although it was scary, the doors it has opened has been tremendous and for the first time, I feel I can full accept myself for who I am.
