My son is 42. He was diagnosed with NLD at age 14, and since then, there has been… nothing.
No help. We hired a steady stream of well-meaning therapists and worked with school counselors, many of whom have, to this day, never even heard of NLD. Never heard of it. And you can bet your life they had no idea how to help him. And they still don’t. To this day, in 2025.
We have looked all over, hired neuropsych evals, and test after test. I read the NVLD Project stories, and they are full of people with advanced degrees having issues at work or losing jobs because of NVLD. My son didn’t get through high school because of his disorder. He was shunted from special schools to special programs. The idea of a college or advanced degrees is so far from our reality that it is laughable.
But this is no laughing matter.
My son is earnest and hard-working, and has started his businesses many times. He has virtually never been a successful employee. He can sell, is indefatigable, thoughtful, hilariously funny, philosophical, helpful, and creative at a high level. His songs propelled his band to local success as a young man. His artwork was beyond his years as a teen.
He lives with us now, and the future is unclear. We are committed and devoted to finding answers for him. He is an amazing man.
Where do we go now?
