You know those backroads out in the country your grandparents used to take?
Well, welcome to living with NVLD. Our lives consist of a daily commute on those backroads. We see things differently than most in terms of getting to the finish line; backroads are the route we take. My struggle is with anxiety, something a lot of people with NVLD suffer from. Backroads typically consist of a lot of turns and hills. My anxiety comes from not being able to see around and/or past those turns and hills.
Compared to the highly engineered expressways that are laid out very clearly with signs that tell you what will be ahead of you and when they will be; expressways are the opposite of how NVLD people operate, as we use the backroads mostly. The backroads present themselves every day to us, at work, school, or even when going to the store. The point here is that people will see our “oddness” in the use of the backroads to get to the finish line, causing frustration and lack of patience in people.
The goal here is for me to show those people that regardless of the path you take, whether it be the backroads or expressways, we all end up with the same success at the finish line. So always be patient with those who have NVLD as well as be kind not only to us but to everyone. I thank you for taking time to read these and I hope it changes the perspective you had.
